This book is a modern biography of Pierre Tousant. Pierre was born a slave in what is now Haiti. He moved to New York in the early days of America. and became a hairdresser at the command of his owner. He ended up providing for his owner and their family with the money he made styling hair. Later he was freed and became a rather wealthy man for the time, but still had to deal with the racism and religious bigotry of the day. And is not in the process of being officially canonized a saint. It takes info both from earlier biographies and letters and news reports from the time.
