Ian Hamilton is a detective on the police force in Edinburgh in 1880. He is from he Highlands, but lives in the city, as does the aunt that raised him after his parents died in a fire. He is still dealing with is issues and questions form his parent's deaths, but he is also dealing with a killer on the streets of the city. A killer who is trying to make his victim's deaths look like accidents, but also leaving distinctive playing cards on their bodies.
