This book is about the changes in ideas on the supernatural and horror genres using two key turning points in the history of the western world to highlight those changes. Or at least that is what the book says it's about at the beginning. It does deal with this; however, it then tries to cover the whole history of horror in books and movies, as well as veering off into detective books and movies. It does deal with how early detective books also deal with similar themes, and in the case of the works of Edger Allen Poe, he wrote both types of stories, but it spends s lot of time on noir films where the only "monster" is humans.
